Screw conveyors (augers)

Screw conveyor (auger) is a conveyor intended for transporting and dosing small particle size, bulk, grain or powder materials in horizontal, vertical or inclined directions. For their efficiency and ease of maintenance, screw conveyors are recognized as very useful and widely applied in food and chemical industries, metallurgy and agriculture.

Screw conveyors have the same design and differ only by their general type (inclined or horizontal), screw diameter and shape, screw blades parameters and screw executions (continuous screw, separate blades, etc.).

The main advantage of screws is the opportunity of closed transporting materials. The special design of screw conveyors excludes material loss. Using auger transport systems, it is possible to assemble completely closed production lines.

Closed design of screw conveyors provides their wide distribution in cement production, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. And stainless steel and non-oxidizing materials executions of augers make screw conveyors irreplaceable in the food industry.

Screw conveyors made from heat-resistant materials are used for transporting hot products.

Principle of operation of screw conveyors

The processed material enters an input chamber/flange, from where it is transported by a screw to an output flange. The screw is driven from a special drive.

Depending on the drive location (in a loading or unloading zone), the auger type can be pushing or pulling. The drive installation place is selected taking into account the layout of the surrounding equipment and does not influence the screw capacity.

The following auxiliary electrical equipment can be purchased additionally to your screw conveyors: power switchboards, cable products, automation systems.

Screw conveyor design

A screw conveyor casing includes some separate sections that can be easily transported, stored and used. Each section has tight inspection doors. Depending on operation conditions, a screw conveyor casing can have a cylindrical or grooved shape.

Due to their section execution, screw conveyors can be long enough, with several loading ports. Sections are connected using their flanges. As a rule, for simplicity, screw conveyor casings are made from standard pipes.

Drives of screw conveyors are selected not only taking into account corresponding working parameters, but also with safety factors implying potential auger jamming. The drive possible execution: gear motor, chain or belt drive. Spline connections (UNI standard) of a drive mechanism with a spiral screw allow to cope with high loads at heavy work.

The screw of such conveyor represents itself a rod with a continuous blade/separate blades.

The number and shape of such blades depends on working conditions and properties of a transported material. Depending on a particular shape of blades, screws can be transporting, mixing (transporting + mixing several products) or chopping/loosening (the design of blades allows to chop/loosen a transported material).

The blades are made of high strength steel and are resistant to abrasion.
